Post 416 Americanism

The American Legion has been committed to the youth of America for over 80 years, when the Legion was organized after World War I.

Our Post has kept up this tradition for many years, serving our community and schools with programs that are of interest to different age groups. Our committee of seven veterans present these topics:

  1. Respect for each other, our country, and our flag.
  2. The importance of a good education.
  3. We are living in the greatest country in the world, with a Constitution and the Bill of Rights, we have more freedoms than most countries of the world.
  4. Our members have served on six of the seven continents of the world. (Using a wall map, we identify these places.)
  5. Flag etiquette-how to display the flag properly.
  6. Our nations capital, the monuments, museums, and Arlington National Cemetery.

We have expanded our program to adult living centers. We did eight programs this past year where we talk about the Great Depression (1929-1939) and the World War II Home Front.

Many in our audience can identify with these years through their own experiences and recollections and we encourage them to speak and discuss what they remember. This has been very successful, since many don't have a chance to talk about such topics without our being there. A little music is often a part of our presentation.

This program is often changed in observances of Memorial Day or Veterans Day when Veterans living at adult living centers are re-recognized for the branch of service and the years they served. Refreshments are often served after these programs to honor these men and women.

Greendale Post 416 is very involved with serving our community of young and old, and serving our wonderful country.
